A certain fatigue set in, after No.Fest 2009. Though we accomplished incorporation as InterArts, have submitted 2 grants, the slow going uncertainty of our livelihood keeps the mundane pursuit of money at the edge of consciousness. The outlook suggests we need a significant boost in financial support from the community to really get the organization going.

There should be news on a grant to "reboot" our website any day now.

A possible Cathedral Park program is in the works.

Legong Gelato (host of the Noise Stage, owned by co-founder Jeffree Helwig) is moving from retail to wholesale, making his gelato available in pints; making the venue available as the InterArts office/gallery.

No.Fest June 27th: Finally a NoFestivus for the rest of us

“No.Fest” the interdisciplinary music and art event, now in its second year, will clang, clatter and rock its way into the streets, bars, and restaurants of St. Johns this coming Saturday, June 27.

“There’s no set theme,” says downtown merchant Jeffree Helwig. Helwig, along with KBOO producer Sean Ongley, created the event last year as a venue for emerging music and art. “It’s not about money, not about being trendy, not about being exclusionary. I would say it’s not a festival at all, because it tries to break down [any] separation between art and everyday life.”

This year’s event is twice the size, hosting 43 musical acts at eight venues from 10am to midnight. NoFooling!

The day features such locally world-famous bands as St. Johns’ own “battle rapper,” Illmaculate, the Evolutionary Jass Band, and Bay Area transplants SubArachnoid Space.

“It’s about North Portland and there’s something for everyone,” says Helwig with an emphasis on the event’s playful DIY and free-to-all ethic. “We’re just in it for the honey.”

News Two At Once!

I hate to have to do this, but TWO of Portland's most venerable non-profit sonic enablers are having fundraisers tonight. Instead of choosing, perhaps you could do both? Half it? (And why, I've always wondered, don't more tax-deductible fundraisers take place RIGHT before tax time as to minimize the financial impact, or at least appear to?)

Event A: KBOO's No Fest @ Backspace

Cexfucx, Irma Vep, Spiro Spero, Teeath, all for just five bucks. Support Portland's ONLY decent radio station, an institution for goddsakes. And still kicking ass after all these years. Last night I heard a fabulous old-school punk show playing classic hardcore tunes from Autistic Youth, GG Allin and the like. This afternoon is was Allen Ginsberg reading "Howl" in its entirety. Now that's public radio with teeth!

Tonight from 7:00PM to midnight KBOO (90.7FM) is also celebrating Stevie Wonder's birthday, a tradition of theirs. And that certainly can't be bad.

Event 1A: Karaoke for PDX Pop!

On Thursday, May 14, beginning at 6pm Voicebox Karaoke Lounge will be charging a reduced $8 cover to sing to your heart’s content, and every penny of that money will go to PDX Pop Now! to help make the festival, compilation, outreach shows and everything else you value about the all-volunteer local music organization possible. See you there, along with a bunch of other musicians, fans and organizers from the best darn music community in the country.

Voicebox is super fun by the way... The way all Karaoke should be—less waiting for you name to be called, more singing/making a fool of one's self. (I remember a game of Scareaoke when I forced Ezra to sing Pearl Jam's "Jeremy." Yeeeek.

There's also a pretty wicked show happening tonight aside from the fundraisers, but since they're necessary, we'll just leave it at that.

Nu.Music.Arts: St.Johns

2nd Annual No.Fest will be held on June 27th from 10am to midnight, in St. Johns of course. But this is about our fund raiser.
On May 14th, 2009 there will be a benefit show at Backspace for No.Fest: Nu.Music.Arts and KBOO Community Radio. No.Fest will announce the complete program and collected works of 2008 via www.nofest.net, including audio and video recordings of Evolutionary Jass Band, White Rainbow, and many others from No.Fest 2008.

KBOO is No.Fest's fiscal sponsor in 2009. In 2008 they were a Co-Sponsor. The difference is in the agreement. This year, KBOO is making fund raising a realistic endeavor for No.Fest by offering an umbrella. A tax-deductible donation is now available to support No.Fest. April is our sponsorship drive. In May, we will begin listing our sponsors in media updates.

I missed you last year, what happened?
No.Fest started when 3 St. Johns musicians wanted to book two St. Johns venues for a full evening of music, circa April 2008. When they discovered St. Johns' town square is a community funded free space, it was decided to make a music festival of it, on Summer Solstice. By June 21st, they scrambled together a surprisingly successful all ages, all day festival of many varieties "new", with twenty-five performances and four venues, partially broadcast live on KBOO 90.7 fm, Portland. The event thus extended itself to an entire region of our great Northwest, not merely the metropolitan area.
The event became known as No.Fest: Nu.Music.Arts: St.Johns, and the concept spilled outside of the limitations of music. The small community of St. Johns became exposed to "the city arts scene" that day. Though divided by no more than roads and bluffs stretching less than 10 miles, Portlanders have neglected a place founded historically prior to Portland; likewise, the people of St. Johns live as if Portland is another place. Art may be the best means of mending this divorce.
